Grounded is Senior Scripture Union in Cambridge House Grammar School. It’s a place where everyone is welcome, nobody is perfect, and all things are possible.
Every Thursday afternoon from 3:30-4:30, pupils from Year 11-Year 14 meet together in the Sixth Form Centre for fun, fellowship and something from God’s Word.
Before Grounded begins we have food (usually juice and biscuits but occasionally tea and toast) in S9 (Mrs Oliver’s room) before heading to the Sixth Form study room for worship. Our Grounded band lead us in praise before we have our theme for the day.
No two weeks are ever the same at Grounded due to the varied programme that is organised by the Grounded Committee.
We like to invite visiting speakers to Grounded to teach us from the Bible. This person usually has a role within a church, works within a Christian organisation or is even a Christian past pupil. It is always good to see a new face at Grounded with a spiritual message that will help members of Grounded grow in their faith and encourage them in their walk with God.
The Alpha Course
Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith and it runs all around the globe. Here, in Cambridge House we’re doing it along with Crown Jesus Ministries. Everyone is welcome and it’s a chance to ask any questions concerning God, the Bible or becoming a Christian. It’s pretty chilled too with a short video and discussion questions in small groups.
Testimony days are a favourite at Grounded! Someone from Grounded will share how they became a Christian and their journey with God to date. In the past, we’ve had tea, toast and testimonies which has been really good.
Held once a month, we study a passage from the Bible in small groups together. The idea is that we build, strengthen and encourage each other as we run the Christian race. Small groups are also a great opportunity to make friends in school, share and have fellowship together.
Shine is an initiative organised by Crown Jesus Ministries, Scripture Union NI and Logos Ministries International. It aims to share the good news of Jesus in schools across the United Kingdom by holding outreach events and working with SU’s. For the fourth year running now, Cambridge House have been involved. The theme this year was ‘Do Something’.
From 15th-17th November 2016, we enjoyed a host of different activities in school. On the Tuesday lunchtime we had a Deal or No Deal gameshow. Wednesday lunchtime saw beatboxer, Harry Bruce come and entertain us with his mad skills with the mic. Thursday lunchtime’s cage football was great craic for everyone who took part. All these lunchtime events led to a huge event on the Thursday evening.
Along with Crown Jesus Ministries we held an evening in school with special guest Paul Marshall from Ulster Rugby. There was also a live band, tuck shop and big prize giveaways along with the much anticipated gunging of a teacher! Mr Alexander and Mrs Spence were the unfortunate teachers who ended up in the gunge tank having been voted for by students at breaktime during the week. Towards the end of the night, Paul shared his testimony with us, and answered some of the questions we had for him. A powerful and challenging message from God’s Word concluded a fantastic night.
We’re looking forward to next year already!
On the weekend of 18th-20th November, members of Grounded travelled to Woodhall Residential Centre in Kilrea for a weekend together.
26 of us had a great weekend as we enjoyed each other’s company and fellowship. Throughout the weekend we had plenty of activities, including canoeing, high ropes, a table quiz, DVD night, worship time in the mornings and evenings and so much more. We all had a great time!
The Big House Charity
This year, we have decided to focus on supporting the work of ‘The Big House’.
The Big House exists to help young people know God's love as they encounter Jesus and are cared for by the church, especially when dealing with difficult issues or circumstances. To do this they provide counselling, camps & weekends, and training for leaders.
Grounded decided to support this charity work as the focus of our outreach this year.
That’s just an overview of what we get up to at Grounded. We’d love to see you come along and join us. All Year 11-Year 14 pupils are very welcome. It’s definitely the place to be on a Thursday afternoon!
