GIRLS PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The Department offers a wide range of activities influenced by the National Curriculum and the expertise of the staff. At Key Stage 3 the pupils have two PE and two Games periods. In these they experience activities which include hockey. gymnastics, health related PE, Ball skills, netball,tennis, athletics, rounders, football,dance, cross country, tag rugby, badminton and golf. At the end of their Key Stage 3 they can choose PE as a examination subject to study in Years 11 and 12 for GCSE. At Key Stage 4 the non examination pupils have two periods of games where they do activities in a rota system. They do blocks of swimming, netball, hockey, badminton, volleyball, pilates, aerobics, athletics, rounders and tennis. They also visit outside clubs where they get an opportunity to try activities like spin cycle, body pump, boxercise and circuits. The examination pupils also get these games opportunities. In addition to this they study other activities in the specification concentrating on their performance and other roles they might wish to do. The AQA examination board offers both Single and Double Award PE. At Key Stage 5 the pupils study AS and A2 level PE. Extra- curricular has a wide range of activities including hockey, athletics, tennis, golf, horse riding, cross country, dance and football. All of these activities provide an opportunity for the girls to take part in various competitions at all levels. The hockey teams are entered for the Derry and Antrim leagues at 1st X1, 2nd X1, U14X1 and U13X1 levels. They are also entered for the various Ulster cup competitions in their age groups. We usually have a good representation at the U15 and U17 area board teams. We have pupils who have represented Ulster and Ireland at U16 and U18 levels. The tennis, cross country, athletic and golf teams are entered in the Board and Ulster competitions.The football team is entered in the Carnagie Cup competition.
