CAMBRIDGE HOUSE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

CROSS CURRICULAR LITERACY DEVELOPMENT PROVISION

Mrs Oliver

In our school, we want to develop articulate pupils who are confident and willing to express their ideas in a supportive and enriching learning environment.  The development of literacy is, therefore, not seen to be the sole responsibility of one department but rather the responsibility of all subject areas.
All staff encourage high standards of literacy.  To support this, Key Stage 3 pupils are provided with a dictionary containing subject-specific vocabulary for each of their subjects.  Reading records are used to promote independent reading, and a trophy awarded for the most diligent junior class.  An accelerated learning programme also exists to provide additional support to pupils who benefit from learning in a small group setting.
Events, such as National Poetry Day and World Book Day, are celebrated annually and participation in internal and external competitions encouraged.  In addition to this, an extra-curricular club is held each week to aid the development of literacy skills in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
