LEARNING FOR LIFE AND WORK
(Citizenship, Employability and Personal Development)

Learning for Life and Work is a statutory component of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, undertaken by pupils at Key Stages 3 and 4.  It is made up of three strands:

Citizenship                                    Mrs McClurg        Head of Learning Area

Employability                                Mrs Proctor          Head of Learning Area

Personal Development                Mrs Oliver            Head of Learning Area

Our aim within the department is to help each young person to develop as an individual, a contributor to society and a contributor to the economy and environment.

The 3 strands are delivered to pupils from Year 8 to Year 12 each year, with the content and focus changing to meet the needs of the pupils.

Key Stage 3 pupils receive 2 periods of Learning for Life and Work in Years 8 and 10, and 1 period in Year 9.  At Key Stage 4, pupils have the opportunity to choose Learning for Life and Work as a full GCSE, or to undertake the statutory requirement of 1 period per week.

In addition to the scheduled scheme of lessons, visiting speakers are invited on a regular basis and pupils are enabled to learn in a practical way.

Our view is that in today’s society it is crucial that young people are empowered to make responsible and informed choices in a factual and practical way; so that they can learn to feel positive about themselves, and learn to respect themselves and others around them.  With this in mind, the department continually reflects on work undertaken, to ensure that provision in this area builds upon current successes.
