CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT The study of Chemistry is fundamental in gaining an insight onto its importance in our lives, in industry and in society in general. In the chemistry department we aim to give our students a broad base in this subject. Chemistry is taught as a discrete science by specialist teachers from Year 10 onwards. At this stage students have one double period each week. In Years 11 and 12 it can be taken as one third of the Double Award Science course or as GCSE Chemistry, both of which follow the CCEA specifications. Those who study Double Award Science have three periods of chemistry each week and those who do GCSE Chemistry have five periods per week. At AS and A2 level we teach the Edexcel specification which has a strong emphasis on practical work and the application of knowledge. All pupils have nine teaching periods per week. Assessment occurs through class and homework, end of topic and term tests and exams. Results of these assessments are recorded and pupil progress is closely monitored through the Key Stage.
